A Day at the Races with Isaac Mizrahi

Isaac Mizrahi's show. Wow what can I say? Lets see I'm sure I can come up with something. Very, Day at the Races look. From the early 1900s. The boater hat the models were sporting was very popular amongst affluent males in the Victorian to Depression era. Isaac's use of it in his collection set the tone, and his use of it on the female models really gave an empowerment to it. His use of pastels reached even someone such as myself; I always look for the black version of anything I like.

He definitely took styles from this early era, loosened, shortened, and lessened the fabrics and made them into stunning pieces that are classy, yet with a flair. A flair that says, "Sure, I'll go to your day at the races, but I'm still me, and you can't change that." Come to think of it, very My Fair Lady, without the cockney accent.

I most certainly look forward to seeing these types of pieces in stores. Among formal-wear were many short frocks that could be worn at day or night, for a day at the races or perhaps a romantic picnic in the park..now if only I can plant the seeds of picnicking in beautiful new clothes in my husband's head..

Fashion week today

Today I tried to watch some of the videos, but work has been really getting me down and I barely have the time to get home, make dinner, talk to my husband who is 6k miles away, clean, and go to bed. So I'll have to make this short.
Just a quick thought to self on Nannette Lepore: Stippling, and Monet.

Her bright colors are reminiscent of Victorian paintings of garden parties and boat rides in summer. When I saw the pieces fluttering down the runway it brought me thoughts of warm summer days, flowers, trees, moscato and clinking glasses under umbrellas. In the words of Martha, "Its a Good Thing." Did anyone feel the same?

Midnight in the Garden of Michael Angel

As I endured the class work has sent me to today, I lamented all the updates to NYFW I was missing as the hours ticked on by. As soon as I got home though I started watching videos, and I found the earliest showing from last Thursday be one of the best!

Michael Angel's collection was beautiful!
As I watched the models walk down the runway my first thoughts were of how gorgeous the dresses were. Very aesthetically pleasing. But as I continued to examine, I realized there was more, much more, to the design.
The dresses are geographically versatile. I live in Hawaii, where I'm deprived of wearing the latest trends for fall/winter and I hate it. My closet is filled with greys and blacks, mostly long sleeves and sweaters, patiently waiting for the day (2.5yrs!) that we travel back to the mainland, never to return.
I found that Angel's collection could most certainly be worn in all climates, all occasions, all seasons. The deep florals speak of exotic wonders, a garden party on a lanai, midnight on a tropical island. But I could just as easily see these jewels of a creation on a rooftop garden party in the middle of Manhattan, right around the time that the crisp Winter air is leaving the area and Spring has come to revive us from our hibernation. I see jewels, glamour, mysticism in these pieces. A playful oracle, prophesying the outcome of a beautiful new season.

Christian Siriano Runway Show

I smashed on his shoes in one of my earlier posts. But I just got done watching the video from his runway show and the clothing makes up for it all. Great form, not too frilly, yet originally, beautifully colored.

Christian Siriano - Fall 2009 Collection - New York Fashion Week - Payless

Form-fitting silk dresses can be extremely hard to pull-off- and on! Trying to pull my French Connection burnished gold dress over my head leaves me sweating and rushing to air myself out before I leave a mark. Then after the damn thing is on, the adjustments so that it doesnt ride up, hang down, twist around, and ruin my night can take longer than my hair and makeup.
But Christian seemed to understand this and when he made these dresses, he did the adjustments pre-insane rage. These dresses already have the perfect pull, the extra layers (thus no wrinkle worries), they are made to show off the curves of the body without causing the wearer undue stress. Just by first glance one can see they are well-made, durable. I think I might even be able to wear panties in one of these without a line showing through.
So the dresses are classy and seem easy to wear, but they aren't just that. They are fierce. The rich colors and fluid nudes imply self-confidence of the wearer. If I were looking to make a simple, confident statement I would don the off-the-shoulder nude dress on the left, while if I was trying to tell someone to notice me in my terribly beauty, I would most certainly go for one of his more colorful creations, the embodiment of what capitivating beauty would wear.
So although the shoes were a total fail in my meagre opinion, he seems to be on the road to redemption with these beautiful, original, up-to-date silken beauties.

Really Amber Rose? Really?

I wonder if the people who work for fashion magazines are forced to say nice things. I suppose so. I mean I guess one can't go around ruffling every one's feathers' every time they commit a fashion crime.
So I'll try to be nice when I make my comments, although I did already say many nice things earlier today.

She kind of looks like she's realizing her mistake and deciding to be defiant about it.

::Takes Amber Rose by the hand:: Amber, is everything going OK with you? Are there serious problems mounting in your life? Baby girl, I think your stylist may have a secret vendetta against you. Did you do her wrong in the past? Because she did you wrong at the VMAs. If you'd turned around you would have seen the man behind you surreptitiously taking a drink of Hennessy (real classy, btw) to avoid showing his embarrassment for you. I know I would have had to do the same. So, I'm trying to take the blame off of you and put it on someone else. Is that nice enough, Glamour?

Fashion week. Lela Rose.

While I'm stuck working inside of a mountain all day, in tropical hell far from anything that I am even remotely interested in, Fashion Week NYC rolls on. Now, my life is not completely inundated with fashion. Lets be honest, I'm a nerd who reads constantly, and prefers alone time with a glass of wine and her cat to going out to the club to people-watch. Maybe the real reason I like fashion is because I'm retardedly stimulated by textures, which fabric seems to enable, especially expensive fabric. Fabric and paper, how I do love thee..

Well, today I was relieved by the Lela Rose collection(after yesterday's shoe fiasco, see below). I had noticed in some ads earlier this year that turquoise and fuschia seem to be pairing up this year. I must admit at first I was skeptical about the union. But after a little self psycho-analysis I concluded that it was merely the trauma of seeing the two put together on an episode of Platinum Weddings a year ago. The shades were more of a vomit teal and maroon though, and it saddend me that 30k plus was being spent these unholy creations that would end up with food all over them anyway.

It was almost this bad, though I must admit its an exagerration but you get the point.teal and fuschia Pictures, Images and Photos

Anyway, Lela Rose. Yes. Good stuff. My point is this: Fuschia and turquoise, if paired together with the perfect shading, can be absolutely stunning. But just be careful. Secondly, I'm glad to see that silky, classic designs are coming back into the dress world.
Lela- I think Coco would have considered you a visionary of her time. Risque classy. You go girl. Oh and I noticed that you had the 10 o' clock spot, but no matter because even after a night of partying I'd be happy to wake up to your fresh new styles.#NYFW

I spy you..

I started this blog originally to review beauty products that I found most useful in my busy life, but right now we need to talk about something else:

Glamour- I love you I love you I love you. But today you let me down.

"You're Going To FREAK For Christian Siriano's New Payless Shoes (Even Though One Model Could Barely Walk In 'Em) http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/09/post-16.html"\

Yes, I freaked. I freaked at the blog posted today at 5:25pm. Yes I freaked over the shoes featured. Freaked because they are hideous.

My husband says Glamour is covering PayLess Shoes because it's "a recession." But quite frankly people, recession: not equal to fashion faux pas. The shoes are 1. unwearable. 2. ugly as hell.

If a high fashion model can't (not won't) walk in a pair of shoes, what in the hell makes anyone think that us simple fashion civilians are going to be able to? Or want to for that matter? I don't care that they are cheap, I don't care that they are totally insane and out-there. They are ugly, you can't walk in them, hell I doubt I could even walk to a table and sit down in them. So let's just put this all behind us and move on.
